[댄 코놀리] 한 달 남은 메이저리그, 올시즌 우승팀은?

메이저리그 시즌이 한 달 남았다. 팬들은 흥분의 도가니에 빠져 매 이닝을 손에 땀을 쥐고 지켜볼 것이다.

하지만 내 생각은 약간 따분한 페넌트 레이스다. 내가 5월 중순에 이미 가망이 없어진 최악의 팀 볼티모어 오리올스를 담당하고 있기 때문에 그런 것은 아니다.

아마도 내가 동부 해안에서 먹고 살기 위해 아메리칸리그를 보고 있고, 큰 재미도 없기 때문이다.

팬들은 통계적으로, 또는 다른 이유로 최고의 야구 팀 5개는 아메리칸리그에 있다고 주장할 수 있다. 그리고 이들 가운데 최고의 두 팀은 보스턴 레드삭스와 뉴욕 양키스라는 사실에 대해서는 논란의 여지가 없다. 이 두 팀은 아메리칸리그 동부라는 같은 디비전에 속해 있다.

어떤 의미에서 이런 사실은 내셔널리그에게 부끄러운 일이다. 그리고 다른 의미에서 이는 고속도로 연쇄 추돌 사고의 야구 버전이라고 할 수 있기 때문에 내셔널리그에 다행스러운 일이다.

내셔널리그 팀 중에서 승률이 0.570을 넘는 팀은 승률 0.592을 기록하고 있는 시카고 컵스 한 팀 뿐이다. 하지만 승률이 0.500 이상인 9개 팀이 있다. 와일드 카드는 2장이 있고, 서로 남은 경기가 8경기 이내인 8개의 팀이 있다. 그에 반해 아메리칸리그의 와일드 카드는 서로 남은 경기가 8경기 이내인 팀이 세 팀이다.

각 리그별 페넌트 레이스에 대한 예측은 아래와 같다.

아메리칸리그 동부

팬들은 양키스와 레드삭스가 브롱스에서 열리는 시즌 마지막 세 경기를 포함해 9월에 서로 여섯 번의 경기를 한다는 것을 기정사실로 받아들이고 있다. 큰 상관은 없어 보인다. 레드삭스는 남은 한 달 동안 완전히 무너지기에는 너무 훌륭한 팀이기 때문이다. MLB에 좋은 소식은 이 두 팀이 플레이오프 첫 번째 라운드에서 서로 상대하게 될 거라는 것이다.

우승팀 예측: 보스턴 레드삭스

아메리칸리그 중부

이 문제로 시간을 낭비할 필요가 없다. 클리블랜드 인디언스가 늦어도 이번 달에 절반은 결판을 낼 것이다.

우승팀 예측: 클리블랜드 인디언스

아메리칸리그 서부
 

좋다. 이건 정당한 레이스다. 하지만 실망스러운 것도 사실이다. 월드시리즈 우승팀 휴스턴 애스트로스와 강팀 킬러 오클랜드 애슬레틱스가 서로의 턱을 강타하고 있다. 두 팀은 디비전 라이벌이지만 우승으로 가는 길목에서 서로 맞붙지는 않을 것이다. 수요일에는 두 팀 간의 마지막 경기가 있다. 뭔가 묘한 기운이 느껴진다. 작은 거인 호세 알투베의 복귀 가능성이 커지면서 휴스턴은 더 건재해지고 있다.

우승팀 예측: 휴스턴 애스트로스

아메리칸리그 와일드 카드

양키스가 기본적으로 와일드 카드 경기에 나설 가능성이 높다. 다른 자리는 디비전에서 우승하지 않은 아메리칸리그 서부 두 팀 가운데 한 팀의 차지가 될 것이다. 바로 애슬레틱스와 매리너스 중 한 팀이다. 애슬레틱스는 시즌 후반기에 뛰어난 경기력을 보였고 마지막 3주 중 1주일 동안 일정이 있다. 승률 15/21인 팀과 승률 0.500 미만인 팀의 대결이다. 하지만 9월에는 매리너스와 6경기를 하게 된다.

진출팀 예측: 뉴욕 양키스와 오클랜드 애슬레틱스

내셔널리그 동부

여기서부터 재밌어진다. 필라델피아 필리스와 애틀랜타 브레이브스는 경합에서 멀어진 것으로 여겨졌었다. 이제 이 두 팀은 9월에 결판을 낼 것이다. 그리고 끝까지 가야 한다. 두 팀은 9월 20일부터 30일까지 일곱 번 맞붙게 된다. 이것이  페넌트 레이스인 셈이다. 브레이브스가 우위에 있기 때문에 브레이브스의 승리를 예상한다. 하지만 몇 가지 이유로 직감은 필리스를 향하고 있다. (아마도 치즈 스테이크 때문에?)

우승팀 예측: 애틀란타 브레이브스

 

내셔널리그 중부

컵스는 최고의 경기력을 보였고 디비전 우승을 향해 나아가고 있다. 특히 콜 해멀스가 되살아났기 때문에 상당히 확신할 수 있다. 또 한 번 내셔널리그 우승을 할 만한 팀이다. 그러나 세인트루이스는 위협적인 팀이다. 능력이 있고 젊은 선수와 베테랑의 조화가 좋은 데다가 자신감도 있다. 그들은 앞서 나갈 수 있다. 얼마 동안 밀워키의 승리에 기대를 걸었지만 내셔널리그 중부의 다른 두 팀을 이기기에는 충분하지 않을 것이다. 하지만 밀워키는 상대적으로 9월 경기 일정이 부담스럽지 않고, 시카고 컵스와 세인트루이스를 상대로 9경기를 치룰 예정이다.

우승팀 예측: 시카고 컵스

내셔널리그 서부

이것이 진짜 경쟁이다. 1위와 3위 간 차이는 3경기이고, 샌프란시스코는 적어도 4위는 할 수 있을 것이라는 희망을 보여주고 있다. 내셔널리그 서부지구는 페넌트 레이스의 열기가 무엇인지를 보여준다. 문제는 이 경쟁자들 모두 결점이 있다는 것이다. 특별히 우수한 팀은 없다. 다저스는 가장 유리한 일정을 앞두고 있다. 반면 애리조나는 9월에 휴스턴, 애틀란타를, 콜로라도는 애리조나, LA다저스, 필라델피아, 워싱턴을 상대 해야 한다. 가혹한 일정이다. 이런 부분 또한 ‘East Coast Bias’(미국 언론계 및 스포츠 분야에서 흔히 쓰는 표현으로, 주로 동부에 위치한 스포츠팀들이 서부보다 더 많은 관심을 받는다는 의미)  라고 불러야할지 모르겠다. 차치하고, 매니 마차도가 9월에 다저스를 끌어올려줄 것으로 기대된다. 그게 바로 위대한 선수들이 하는 일이다.

우승팀 예측: LA 다저스

내셔널리그 와일드 카드

이것도 지켜볼 만한 흐름이다. 하지만 훌륭한 팀들이 관련되어 있는지는 확신할 수 없다. 세인트루이스는 너무 잘 하고 있어서 포스트시즌에 안 나갈 수 없을 것 같다. 그렇다면 필라델피아와 애리조나, 콜로라도가 남는다. 물론 현재로서는 애리조나가 최고의 팀이라고 생각하지만 마지막 한 자리는 필리스 차지가 될 것이라고 예측해 본다.

There’s a month left in the Major League Baseball season. There should be excitement brimming, fans on the edges of their seats, every inning counting.

From my viewpoint, though, it’s a bit of a ho-hum pennant race. And that’s not because I cover baseball’s worst team, the Baltimore Orioles, who were out of contention by mid-May.

It’s probably because I watch American League games for a living, and I do it on the East Coast, and right now there is almost no drama percolating.

You can make the argument, statistically or otherwise, that five of the best teams in baseball are in the AL. And there’s no arguing that the two best are the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, and 
they are in the same division: The AL East.

So, in one sense, shame on the National League. And, in another sense, thank goodness for the NL, which is baseball’s version of a pile-up on the highway.

There is only one NL team playing above .570 baseball in the NL, the Chicago Cubs, at .592. But there are nine others that are playing .500 or better. There are two wild card sports available and eight teams within eight games of each other. In contrast, there are three teams within eight games of each other for the AL wild card.

Here’s my look at each race, with predictions.

AL East

Baseball people want you to know that the Yankees and Red Sox play each other six times in September including the season’s final three games in the Bronx. Doesn’t matter. These Red Sox are too good to fully collapse with a month to play. The good news for MLB: If things go as planned, these teams will face each other in the first full round of the playoffs.

Prediction: Red Sox

AL Central

No need to waste time on this one. The Cleveland Indians will clinch halfway through the month if not sooner.

Prediction: Indians

AL West

OK, this is a legitimate race, but it’s also disappointing. The World Champion Houston Astros and the giant-killer Oakland Athletics are slugging each other on the chins. But they won’t face each other at all down the stretch, despite being division rivals. Wednesday is the last game between the two. That stinks. The Astros have gotten healthier – with the return of diminutive Jose Altuve again looming large.

Prediction: Astros

AL Wild Card

The Yankees are basically in and likely will host the Wild Card game. The other spot is really between the two AL West teams that don’t win the division. That looks like the A’s and the Mariners. And the A’s get the call since they have been outstanding for much of the second half and have a week schedule in the final three weeks, 15 of 21 versus sub-.500 teams. They do face the Mariners six times in September, however.

Prediction: Yankees and A’s

National League East

This is where the fun starts. The Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves were supposed to be a year away from contending. Now they are fighting it out in September. And it should go down to the wire. These teams face each other seven times from Sept. 20-30. THAT is a pennant race. The Braves have the upper hand, and so my brain says they win this thing. Although the gut for some reason is pointing toward Philly (the cheesesteaks, maybe?).

Prediction: Braves

National League Central

The Cubs have caught fire and on their way to a divisional crown. I’m fairly confident in that, especially with Cole Hamels reinvigorated. This is the team to beat in the NL again. That said, the St. Louis Cardinals are dangerous. They are talented, have a nice mix of young and veteran, and they are confident. They could make a run. I’ve been on the Brewers’ bandwagon for a while, but they may not have enough to beat the other two in the division. Still, the Brewers have a relatively easy September schedule and get nine against the Cubs and Cardinals.

Prediction: Cubs

National League West

Now this is a race. Three games separate first from third, and the San Francisco Giants are at least showing they have signs of life in fourth place. This is what pennant fever is all about. The problem is these contenders are all flawed. None is particularly good. The Dodgers have the most accommodating schedule down the stretch. The Diamondbacks must face the Astros and Braves in September and the Rockies end the season with the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Phillies and Nationals. That’s a gauntlet. Plus, call it East Coast bias, but I expect Manny Machado to lift the Dodgers up in September. That’s what great players do.

Prediction: Dodgers

NL Wild Card

Again, it should be a race to watch. But I’m not sure there are many great teams involved. I think the Cardinals are playing too well not to make the postseason. That leaves the Phillies, the Diamondbacks and Rockies to battle. Of those three, I think Arizona is the best team right now, but I’m rolling the dice with the Phillies for that last spot.
