[더 타임즈] ‘평범한 팀’으로 전락한 네덜란드

몇 달 후 여름이 되면, 세계 최고의 선수들이 러시아에 모인다. 월드컵이라는 무대에서 실력을 겨룰 이들 가운데에는 지난 2007년 유로 U21에서 좋은 인상을 남겼던 선수들도 있다. 벨기에 대표팀에는 얀 베르통언, 악셀 비첼, 토마스 베르마엘렌이 건재하고, 세르비아 대표팀에는 브라니슬라프 이바노비치와 알렉산다르 콜라로프가 버티고 있다. 심지어 잉글랜드의 경우에도 조 하트, 애슐리 영, 개리 케이힐이 대표팀에 합류할 가능성이 아직 남아 있는 상황이다. 그러나 이제는 흐릿한 기억이 되어버린 2007년, 그 여름날에 유로 U21 우승 트로피를 차지했던 주인공은 벨기에도, 세르비아도, 당연히 잉글랜드도 아니었다. 당시 앳된 얼굴로 트로피를 들어올렸던 선수들은 주황빛 유니폼을 입고 있었다.

 

그로부터 11년 후, 현재. 네덜란드 선수들은 TV 중계를 통해 월드컵을 지켜볼 예정이다. 지난 유로 2016에 이어 2회 연속으로 주요 대회에서 본선 진출에 실패했기 때문이다. 도대체 무엇이 잘못된 것인지에 대한 논의는 지금까지 끝도 없이 이어져 오고 있기 때문에, 우선 몇 가지만 짚고 넘어가도록 하자. 첫째, 약 1,700만 명 남짓한 인구의 네덜란드는(독일의 인구와 비교하면 약 1/5 규모다) 작은 나라임에도 국제 대회에서 강적들을 꺾어온 역사가 있다. 둘째, ‘오라녜(the Oranje)’는 어딘가 기복이 심한 듯한 모습을 늘 보여왔는데, 1982년·1986년·2002년 월드컵에 출전하지 못했던 것이 그 예다. 셋째, 지난 2010년 월드컵 결승전에 이어 2014년 월드컵 준결승에 진출하는 데 네덜란드가 지나치게 힘을 쏟았을 가능성이 있다. 두 대회를 치르는 동안 효과적으로 지도를 받았을지는 몰라도 각 선수들의 재능이 피치 전반에 흘러 넘쳤다고 하기는 어렵기 때문이다.

 

이러한 지점들을 고려하더라도, 현재 네덜란드는 대단히 곤란한 상황에 놓여 있다. 유로 2016과 이번 러시아 월드컵에 연달아 참가하지 못하게 된 것을 제외하면, 지난 32년 동안 네덜란드가 연속으로 국제 대회 진출에 실패했던 적은 없었다. 그리고 솔직하게 이야기하자면 이번 월드컵에서 네덜란드가 아쉽게 기회를 놓쳤다고 하기도 어려우며, 유로 2016의 경우에도 마찬가지였다. 유로 2016 예선 당시 네덜란드는 체코, 아이슬란드, 터키보다 뒤쳐져 조 4위까지 떨어졌고, 이번 월드컵 유럽 지역 예선에서는 프랑스, 스웨덴에 밀려 3위를 기록하며 유로 2016 예선에서보다는 조금 나은 성적을 남겼다. 이제 네덜란드의 피파(FIFA) 랭킹은 21위로, 아이슬란드와 웨일즈보다도 아래에 놓여 있다. 현재 피파 랭킹은 지난 4년 동안의 성과를 반영한 결과다.

 

이는 상당히 심각한 문제다. 주요 국제 대회에서 네덜란드 대표팀이 훌륭한 모습을 보였던 것이 겨우 4년 전이라고는 하더라도, 이 문제의 뿌리를 찾으려면 그 2007년의 여름으로 돌아가야 할 필요가 있다. 당시 폽 데 한 감독이 이끌었던 23명의 스쿼드 가운데 오직 1명, 라이언 바벨만이 로날드 쿠만 네덜란드 대표팀 감독의 소집 명단에 포함되었다(쿠만의 네덜란드 대표팀은 이번 주 금요일-현지 시간 기준-에 잉글랜드 대표팀과 평가전을 치를 예정이다).

 

지금 네덜란드에는 하나의 ‘세대’로서 있어주어야 할 선수들이 없다. 그 연령대의 선수들이 일찍 저물어 버렸거나, 애초에 피어나지조차 못했기 때문이다. 이제는 대표팀 은퇴를 선언한 아르연 로번, 베슬러이 스네이더르, 로빈 판 페르시와 이제 막 출발점에 선 젊은 버질 반 다이크, 스테판 데 브라이, 멤피스 데파이 사이에는 너무도 머나먼 세대의 차이가 있다. 현재 네덜란드 스쿼드에 만27세에서 만30세 사이에 있는 필드 플레이어는 패트릭 반 안홀트, 조르지니오 바이날둠, 바스 도스트, 그리고 부상에 시달리는 케빈 스트루트만뿐이다.

 

결국 네덜란드 대표팀에는 경험이 풍부하고 실력 있는 선수가 부족할 수밖에 없다. 유로 2012 당시에는 A매치 출전 경험이 50경기 이상인 선수가 11명뿐이었으며, 현재 스쿼드에는 단 한 명도 없다.

 

네덜란드가 처한 또 다른 문제는 에레디비시의 수준 하락이다. 얼마 전까지만 해도 에레디비시는 유럽 각국 리그 순위에서 6위로 평가되었으나 이제는 오스트리아, 스위스, 체코의 1부 리그에 밀려 14위까지 내려가 있는 상황이다.

 

또한, 이민자 가정 출신 선수들이 네덜란드 대표팀을 선택하지 않음으로써 재능 있는 선수들을 충원하는 데 어려움을 겪고 있기도 하다. 벨기에, 프랑스, 독일의 경우 이중국적을 가진 선수들을 대표팀으로 끌어들이면서 특출한 자원을 지키는 데 성공하고 있는 반면, 네덜란드는 하킴 지예흐, 소피앙 암라바트, 자카리아 라비아드를 모로코에 빼앗긴 상황이다. 이 세 선수는 모로코 대표팀 소속으로 러시아 월드컵에 참가할 예정이다. 

 

그렇다고 해서 네덜란드 대표팀의 문제가 선수들과 관련된 것만은 아니다. 로번, 반 다이크, 스트루트만, 데 브라이가 있는 스쿼드라면 그래도 월드컵에 진출할 수 있으며, 유로 2016은 말할 것도 없다. 그러나 2014년 이후로 네덜란드 대표팀 감독 자리에 앉은 이들이 끔찍할 정도의 수준이었던 것이다. 이는 불가리아와의 러시아 월드컵 지역 예선 경기 당시 다니 블린트 감독이 내렸던 선택을 통해 단적으로 알 수 있다. 다니 블린트는 네덜란드에게 대단히 중요했던 그 경기에서 겨우 만17세의 수비수 마타이스 데 리트를 선발 출전시켰고, 결국 전반전에만 불가리아에게 2골을 헌납하면서 하프 타임에 데 리트를 교체 아웃시키고 말았다.

 

쿠만이 네덜란드 대표팀의 사령탑에 오른 것은 긍정적인 신호다. 그렇지만 리누스 미셸, 요한 크루이프, 루이 판 할, 프랑크 레이카르트로 이어지는 네덜란드의 훌륭한 지도자 계보도 이제는 위태로운 상황이다. 바로 얼마 전 레딩 측에서 야프 스탐 감독의 경질을 발표했으며, 이번 시즌에만 쿠만 본인을 비롯해 프랑크 데 부어와 피터 보츠가 시즌 중에 명예롭지 못하게 팀을 떠났기 때문이다.

 

한때 힘이 넘쳤던 “더치 스쿨(Dutch school)”에 이제는 그림자가 드리우고 있다. 누군가는 대표팀이 정체성을 잃었다고 생각하겠지만, 또 다른 누군가는 네덜란드만의 정체성을 끊임없이 그리워하면서 실용성을 추구하지 않는다면 실질적인 도움이 되지 않을 것이라고 생각한다. 흘러간 ‘오라녜’의 전설적인 선수들로서는 대표팀의 패배를 목격하고 나면 전술적인 단점이나 아름다움이 부족하다는 것을 한탄하게 되기 때문이다.

 

그렇다고 해서 네덜란드 대표팀에 먹구름만 가득한 것은 아니다. 데파이, 반 다이크가 좋은 경기력을 보이고 있으며, 아약스의 저스틴 클루이베르트(패트릭 클루이베르트의 아들)가 유망주로 떠오르고 있다. 그러나 전반적으로는, 유로 1996 당시 배리 데이비스가 남겼던 말이 되살아날 가능성은 극히 드문 듯한 분위기다. “미래는 밝고, 미래는 주황빛입니다.” 그로부터 20년이 흐른 지금, 이제 그 주황빛은 도리어 위험을 알리는 조명처럼 보이고 있다.

SPORT: (FOOTBALL) WEAK LEAGUE AND A LOST GENERATION - HOLLAND'S DECLINE INTO MEDIOCRITY

WHEN the world's best players gather in Russia for this summer's World Cup, there will be many accomplished graduates of the 2007 European Under-21 Championship. Belgium will take Jan Vertonghen, Axel Witsel and Thomas Vermaelen; Serbia will include Branislav Ivanovic and Aleksandar Kolarov; even England may offer Joe Hart, Ashley Young or Gary Cahill a seat on the plane. Back in that hazy summer, though, none of those players were fresh-faced champions. The players who lifted the trophy were wearing orange.

 

 

Fast forward 11 years and Holland will watch this World Cup on TV, their second consecutive failure to qualify for a leading tournament. The question of what has gone wrong has been endlessly debated, so a few things bear stating in advance. One, the Netherlands, with a population of 17 million - about five times smaller than Germany - has historically punched hugely above its weight in international football. Two, the Oranje have always been somewhat feast-or-famine, missing the 1982, 1986 and 2002 World Cups. Three, the team probably overperformed in reaching the 2010 World Cup final and 2014 semi-finals, when they were effectively coached but not necessarily brimming with talent all over the pitch.

 

 

Even with those caveats, though, the present predicament is stark. Holland, who face England in Amsterdam tomorrow (Friday), have not missed consecutive tournaments for 32 years, and in truth they weren't close to making this World Cup, or the expanded 2016 Euros. For the European Championship, they came fourth in their qualifying group, behind the Czech Republic, Iceland and Turkey. This time they fared little better in qualifying, third behind France and Sweden. They have fallen to 21st, beneath Iceland and Wales, in the Fifa rankings, which reflect results over the past four years. 

 

 

It is a significant malaise, but while the national team were excelling on the world stage only four years ago, the roots of the problem stretch back to that summer in 2007. Of the 23 players in Foppe de Haan's outstanding squad, only one - Ryan Babel - is in Ronald Koeman's senior squad to face England.

 

 

The players who ought to be Holland's senior pros now have either fallen away or never kicked on. Between the now-retired cohort of Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Robin van Persie, and the younger vanguard led by Virgil van Dijk, Stefan de Vrij and Memphis Depay, a generation gap yawns like a chasm. In the present squad, the only outfield players aged between 27 and 30 are Patrick van Aanholt, Georginio Wijnaldum, Bas Dost and the injury-plagued Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman.

 

 

The squad is thin on experience and elite quality. At Euro 2012, they had 11 players with at least 50 caps. The present squad contains none. 

 

 

Holland are also paying for the decline of the Eredivisie, not long ago considered the sixth-strongest national league in Europe; now ranked 14th by Uefa, beneath the top flights of Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. 

 

 

There has also been a significant talent drain of players from immigrant backgrounds. Whereas Belgium, France and Germany have successfully retained their most talented dual-heritage players, Holland have lost Hakim Ziyech, Sofyan Amrabat and Zakaria Labyad to Morocco, who are going to the World Cup.

 

 

But it is not all about the players. A squad containing Robben, Van Dijk, Strootman and De Vrij was still capable of qualifying for the World Cup - and certainly for Euro 2016. The management since 2014 has been disastrous, epitomised by Danny Blind throwing the 17-year-old Matthijs de Ligt into defence for a vital World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria. De Ligt was hauled off at half-time as Holland lost 2-0.

 

 

Koeman's appointment confers optimism, but the rich coaching lineage of Rinus Michels, Johan Cruyff, Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard is in peril too. Reading's Jaap Stam is the latest Dutch manager to lose his job during a season in which Koeman, Frank de Boer and Peter Bosz were also ignominiously fired.

 

 

The "Dutch school", once a source of power, now casts a shadow. While some feel the national team have lost their identity, others feel the continual, nostalgic emphasis on a Dutch identity, at the expense of pragmatism, is constraining and unhelpful. Defeats often prompt some past Oranje legends to bemoan the team's tactical or aesthetic shortcomings.

 

 

It is not all gloom. The form of Depay and Van Dijk, and the emergence of Ajax's Justin Kluivert, son of Patrick, offers promise. But overall there is little to revive Barry Davies's immortal line during Euro '96: "The future's bright, the future's orange." Two decades on, that orange glow looks more like a warning light.
