<스털링 활용법?>

 

가레스 사우스게이트 잉글랜드 대표팀 감독이 당면하고 있는 숙제는 적지 않다. 그러나 그 중에서도 종종 대수롭지 않게 여겨지는 것을 꼽자면, 어떻게 해야 사우스게이트가 라힘 스털링을 가장 잘 활용할 수 있을지, 그 방법에 대한 문제다.

 

스털링은 지난 9월 몰타와의 월드컵 예선 경기에서 선발 출전했으나 슬로바키와의 다음 일정에 대비하기 위해 경기 도중 교체 아웃되었다. 한 달 뒤에도 슬로베니아와의 월드컵 예선전을 치르기 위해 대표팀에 소집되었으나, 부상으로 인해 11월에는 대표팀 명단에 이름을 올리지 못하며 독일, 브라질과의 친선전에 출전하지 못했다. 그렇다면 지금과 같이 사우스게이트가 백스리 체제를 고집할 것이 명백해진 상황에서, 스털링은 어떻게 활용할 계획인 것일까?

 

몸 상태를 회복한 해리 케인이 러시아 월드컵에서 잉글랜드 대표팀 공격진의 정 중앙에 서고, 그 오른쪽에 스털링이 위치하며, 스털링의 뒤에는 맨체스터 시티에서 한솥밥을 먹고 있는 카일 워커가 라이트백으로 나서며 3-4-3 포메이션의 일부를 구성하게 될 경우, 마커스 래쉬포드와 델레 알리가 이와 같은 구상에 어떻게 어우러질 수 있을지 생각하기란 쉽지 않다.

 

대표팀에서 스털링은 부당하게 희생당해온 측면이 있는데, 대표팀에서의 경기력이 점차 떨어짐에 따라 스털링이 잉글랜드 유니폼을 입고 득점을 기록한 것도 이미 꽤 오래 전의 일이 되었다(2015년 10월, 에스토니아전). 이는 펩 과르디올라가 맨시티에서 스털링을 활용하는 방식과는 상당히 날카로운 대조를 이룬다. 사우스게이트가 스털링에게 일말의 신뢰를 갖고 있기는 한 것일까?

 

또한, 이보다 더 포괄적인 문제가 있다. 알리는 사우스게이트 체제에서 출전한 첫 번째 경기에서 득점을 기록했지만 지난 8경기 중 6경기에서 풀타임을 소화하지 못하고 경기 도중 교체되었다. 래쉬포드는 사우스게이트 부임 이후 12경기에 출전했지만 단 1골만을 기록하고 있다. 스털링, 래쉬포드, 알리의 3인으로 이루어진 공격진이라면 총 29경기에서 2골보다는 많은 득점을 기록했어야 했다. 특히, 그 29경기 동안 상대했던 팀들의 실력을 고려하면 더욱(3명의 출전 경기 수를 모두 합한 값이 29경기). 마찬가지로, 잉글랜드 대표팀 역시 사우스게이트 부임 이후 치른 14경기에서 고작 21득점만을 기록하는 데 그치고 있다.

 

 

 

<수비 조합?>

 

지난 11월, 잉글랜드 대표팀은 독일, 브라질과의 친선전에서 연달아 0-0 무승부를 거두었다. 사우스게이트는 특히 해리 맥과이어, 조 고메즈, 존 스톤스의 이름을 언급하며 수비에서의 활약을 높이 평가했는데, 마치 세 선수를 단지 미래의 자원으로서만이 아니라 곧바로 투입 가능한 전력으로 생각하고 있는 듯한 분위기였다.

 

그렇다면, 현재 스톤스와 고메즈는 분명히 걱정스러운 상황에 놓여 있다고 할 수 있다. 스톤스의 경우 소속팀 맨시티에서 경기에 꾸준히 출전하지 못하고 있는데다가 지난 달에는 단 한 차례의 기회밖에 받지 못했고, 고메즈의 경우 이제 막 리버풀에 복귀했으나 그마저도 라이트백의 역할을 소화하고 있는 것이다. 그러나 사우스게이트의 머릿속에는 무언가 진행되고 있는 계획이 있다. 당분간은 개리 케이힐, 크리스 스몰링, 마이클 킨과 같은 선수들 옆에 공을 다룰 줄 아는 센터백들을 세우겠다는 것이다.

 

다음 주 어느 시점에는 에릭 다이어를 백스리의 한 축으로 세우는 시도가 이루어질 가능성도 있다. 그러나 네덜란드, 이탈리아와의 평가전에서 눈여겨보아야 할 지점은 새로이 대표팀에 합류한 번리의 제임스 타코우스키와 스완지 시티의 알피 모슨이 어떤 모습을 보여줄지에 대해서다. 번리에서 경기하는 것과 잉글랜드 대표팀에서 경기하는 것은 다른데다가 션 다이치 번리 감독이 상당히 치밀하게 경기를 준비하는 인물인 만큼, 타코우스키로서는 대표팀에 적응하고 다이치의 보호 없이도 잘 할 수 있다는 두 가지 과제를 모두 넘을 수 있어야 할 것이다.

 

 

 

<양보다 질!>

 

현재까지 사우스게이트가 기용했던 선수는 총 44명에 달한다. 만약 네덜란드나 이탈리아와의 경기에서 루이스 쿡, 닉 포프, 타코우스키, 모슨 가운데 출전하는 선수가 생긴다면 사우스게이트 체제에서 출전했던 선수의 수는 더 늘어날 전망이다. 그렇지만 중요한 것은 ‘양’이 아니라, ‘질’의 문제다. 잉글랜드 대표팀에 뿌리 깊게 박혀서 지금까지도 남아 있는 것은 질의 문제이기 때문이다.

 

이전의 사례를 살펴 보자면, 로이 호지슨의 경우 부임 이후 첫 14경기에서 총 45명의 선수를 기용했다. 한편으로는 사우스게이트가 그 당시의 경기력을 토대로 선수를 선발하는 것처럼 보이는 것도 사실이다. 그렇기 때문에 킨, 루크 쇼, 해리 윙크스 등의 선수가 대표팀 명단에서 빠져 있는 것이다. 그러나 그러한 방식에는 위험성이 있다. 소속팀에서의 모습이 그대로 대표팀까지 이어지지 않는다는 점에서 특히 그렇다. 소속팀과 대표팀에서의 간극을 보여주는 대표적인 사례가 바로 스털링이다.

 

대표팀 소집 명단에 늘 변화가 발생함에 따라, 이제는 몇 개의 자리를 두고 일종의 오디션을 치르는 것과 같은 느낌마저 든다. 적어도 11개의 선발 라인업은 충분히 짰을 법한 수의 선수를 선발해 보았으니, 이제 이번 주 안으로는 앞으로 어떻게 11명의 선발 선수를 구성할 것일지에 대해 실질적인 진전이 이루어져야 필요가 있다.

 

 

 

<No.1 자리는 누구에게?> 

 

No.1 자리가 “누구에게나 열려 있다”고 공공연하게 선포되어 있는 가운데, 잉글랜드가 어떻게 4명의 No.1 후보를 추려낼지에 관심이 쏠리는 상황이다. 조 하트, 조던 픽포드, 잭 버틀란드, 포프 모두 분명히 두 번의 평가전에서 어느 정도 출전 시간을 확보할 필요가 있기 때문이다.

 

이번 평가전을 통해 데뷔전을 치르지 못한다면 포프가 러시아 월드컵 최종 명단에 포함될 가능성은 없을 것이며, 픽포드의 경우 지난 독일과의 친선전에서 인상적인 데뷔전을 치른 후 다시 한 번 좋은 경기를 펼칠 기회를 얻고자 하는 마음이 있을 것이다. 하트는 웨스트햄 유나이티드에서 주전 자리를 놓친 지 오래되어 출전 기회를 확보할 필요가 있고, 버틀란드는 지난 번 대표팀에 소집되었으나 손가락 부상을 당하면서 경기에 출전하지 못하고 중도 퇴소했다. 

 

4명의 골키퍼 각각에게 장단점이 있지만, 잉글랜드 수비진이 변화의 고통을 겪고 있는 만큼 수비진과 골키퍼는 서로를 아주 잘 이해하고 있어야 할 필요가 있다. 6월 18일, 그러니까 튀니지와의 첫 번째 조별 예선 경기가 펼쳐질 날까지 이제 잉글랜드에게 남아 있는 기회는 단 4차례의 평가전뿐이다. 사우스게이트는 “골키퍼를 결정할 때 백스리가 영향을 미치지는 않을 것이라 생각한다”고 밝혔다.

 

“잉글랜드가 하고자 하는 경기 방식에 가장 적합한 골키퍼를 선발해야 할 것입니다. 대회에 임하는 자세가 되어 있고, 책임감이 따르는 No.1 자리를 감당할 수 있는 선수를 선발하고자 합니다.”

 

“지금 대표팀에는 얼마 동안 No.1 자리에 있었던 선수도 있지만(하트), 그 선수는 여러 가지 상황 상 현재 소속팀에서 주전 골키퍼로 출전하지 못하고 있습니다. 처해 있는 상황을 바꿀 수는 없습니다. 그저 올바른 결정을 내려야 할 뿐입니다.”

 

이제 사우스게이트는 누가 잉글랜드의 No.1인지를 결정하고, 약간이라도 신뢰를 보여주어야 할 것이다.

Help Sterling replicate his club form

There are many pressing concerns that Gareth Southgate must resolve, though one which is often overlooked is how the England manager gets the best out of Raheem Sterling.

 

 

The Manchester City forward was hauled off at half-time against Malta in September, dropped for the next game against Slovakia, recalled against Slovenia and then missed out against Germany and Brazil because of injury. So, what is the plan for Sterling given the constraints that Southgate has created with his apparent insistence on playing a three-man defence?

 

 

If Sterling plays to the right of a fit Harry Kane in Russia in a 3-4-3 formation, and in front of his Manchester City team-mate Kyle Walker, it is difficult to see how Marcus Rashford and Dele Alli also fit in. 

 

 

Sterling has unfairly been made a scapegoat for England and his form for his country has waned, with his most recent goal coming against Estonia in October 2015. That is in sharp contrast to the tune that Pep Guardiola has got out of him at club level. Does Southgate even believe in him? 

 

 

There is a wider issue here. Alli scored in his first appearance under Southgate, but has been substituted in six of his past eight appearances. Rashford has one goal in 12 appearances under Southgate. The trio of Sterling-Rashford-Alli should be producing more than two goals in 29 combined appearances especially given the calibre of opponents they have been playing against. Likewise England, who have scored only 21 goals in 14 games under Southgate.

 

 

Explore his defensive options

Southgate has name-checked Harry Maguire, Joe Gomez and John Stones following their performances in the goalless draws against Germany and Brazil last November, as if he regards them for the here and now and not just the future. 

 

 

It should be a concern that Stones is out of the Manchester City side at the moment and has played only once in the past month, while Gomez has just returned for Liverpool, albeit at right back. Yet this is the path down which Southgate wants to proceed: ball-playing centre halves with players such as Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling and Michael Keane out of the picture for the time being. 

 

 

There is a willingness to try Eric Dier in a back three at some point over the next week, but what will be interesting in the games with Holland and Italy is how the new boys James Tarkowski, of Burnley, and Alfie Mawson, of Swansea City, fare. Playing for Burnley is different to playing for England and the challenge for Tarkowski is to prove that he can do both when not protected to the extent that he would be in Sean Dyche's compact blueprints.

 

 

Focus on quality, not quantity

To date Southgate has used 44 different players, with that number set to swell should Lewis Cook, Nick Pope, Tarkowski or Mawson feature in either of the games against Holland or Italy. 

 

 

All of which serves to highlight that it is not necessarily quantity, but quality, that remains England's deepest-rooted issue. 

 

 

By way of context, Roy Hodgson used 45 different players in his first 14 matches. On the one hand, it appears Southgate is picking on form, hence the reason why players such as Keane, Luke Shaw and Harry Winks are absent. 

 

 

There is risk attached to that, not least because club displays rarely translate seamlessly onto the international stage - as Sterling shows. 

 

 

Yet the turnover in talent now feels like an audition for places on the periphery. Having selected enough players for four teams, Southgate needs to make progress this week with what his first XI looks like.

 

 

Which of four will go into No 1 shirt? 

Having declared that the No 1 jersey is "up for grabs," it will be intriguing to see how England sift through the candidates when arguably all four of Joe Hart, Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland and Pope need game time against Holland and Italy. 

 

 

There is no point calling up Pope if he is not going to make his debut, Pickford will want the chance to build on his impressive debut against Germany, Hart needs games after too much time on the sidelines for West Ham United and Butland pulled out of the last get-together with a broken finger sustained in training with England.

 

 

There are pros and cons for each candidate, but with England's defence in the throes of change the understanding between the defence and the goalkeeper needs to be solid. 

 

 

England have just six hours of football left before they open their World Cup campaign against Tunisia on June 18. "I think the back three doesn't influence my decision on the 'keeper," Southgate said. 

 

 

"We've got to pick the 'keeper in terms of who is going to be the best to play the way we want to play, handle the tournament, handle the experience of being England No 1 which comes with responsibility. 

 

 

"There is a circumstance here where we have had someone [Hart] who has been No 1 for a period of time but he currently isn't No 1 for his club due to a change in circumstance. We can't affect where we are. We just have to make the right decision." 

 

 

Southgate needs to decide who his No 1 is and show a little faith.
